Vocational schools provide a viable pathway to nursing employment for individuals with heavy work commitments or limited time for time study. These institutions offer a variety of nursing programs, enabling candidates to fit their study within budget and schedule constraints. Most importantly, vocational, career, and community colleges offer a rapid path to nursing employment.
Individuals who wish to become licensed practical nurses (LPNs) typically attend a short 12- to 18-month certificate program. LPN certificates are offered by over a dozen community colleges throughout Maryland, including Anne Arundel Community College and College of Southern Maryland. The state’s aspiring registered nurses (RNs) can enroll in a lengthier two- to three-year associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) program. The ADN is offered at many of these same community colleges, as well as additional schools like Chesapeake College and Montgomery College. Graduates of either program must pass the relevant NCLEX national examination to gain state licensure.
