Vermont has several registered nursing (RN) to bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) completion programs, often called “RN-to-BSN” programs for short. They offer a unique opportunity for RNs to pursue higher education without the usual time and resource demands of a four-year BSN program. They are therefore an excellent option for working RNs that wish to advance further in the healthcare field.

An introduction to RN-to-BSN programs
Typical RN-to-BSN training lasts two years. Students can expect to take higher-level courses in areas such as clinical management, biochemistry, pharmacology, management concepts, anatomy, physiology, and developmental psychology. RNs with an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) or nursing diploma may transfer credits from their previous program in order to reduce the time commitment. Students conduct both direct and indirect patient care in local hospitals under the supervision of experienced nursing staff. RN-to-BSN programs also enable students to give nursing seminars or advance to teaching positions.

Career outlook for RN-to-BSN graduates
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the type of degree directly affects a nurse’s earnings. For example, BSN-holders earn roughly $12,000 per year more than RNs with a diploma or associate’s degree. A BSN degree is also required for many administrative and management positions, making it imperative for nurses with high career aspirations.

Vermont’s RN-to-BSN programs
The University of Vermont and Southern Vermont College offer two of the best RN-to-BSN programs in the state. University of Vermont’s program is offered online, so it is designed for working adults. The program also features clinical experience in students’ local areas. Southern Vermont College’s program is offered on campus and allows students to transfer a maximum of 64 credit hours from their ADN program.
