Many of New Hampshire’s registered nurses (RNs) first enter the workforce by earning an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) and passing the NCLEX-RN national licensure exam. The ADN certainly provides the most streamlined prelicensure program, requiring just two years of full-time study. However, as the country’s healthcare system grows more complex, nursing employers are increasingly preferencing candidates with a bachelor’s degree in their hiring and promotion decisions. Indeed, the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree is quickly becoming the gold standard in nursing education.

To meet this standard, New Hampshire’s ADN-educated nurses don’t need to undertake a completely new course of study. Rather, they can enroll in an RN-to-BSN degree completion program. These programs are specially designed to build on existing nurses’ previous studies and current knowledge base. A traditional RN-to-BSN program requires just two years of full-time study to earn a bachelor’s degree. Many nurses choose to enroll on a part-time basis instead, enabling them to continue working while attending evening or weekend classes. A number of schools have also launched innovative online-only RN-to-BSN delivery models.

New Hampshire’s BSN-educated nurses will find enhanced career prospects with local employers like Elliot Hospital, Portsmouth Regional Hospital, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. They’ll also likely experience a significant boost in compensation. While the state’s RNs earn a median annual salary of $62,700, those with BSN degrees frequently earn top-quartile pay of $76,700 or more per year.

To help New Hampshire’s registered nurses take a significant career leap, we’ve profiled below several of the state’s top RN-to-BSN programs.
