Programs include LPN/LVN, ADN, BSN, MSN, and more

Some aspiring nurses prefer the fast track to a career in nursing, so they might choose an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) program to get started within 2-3 years. After several years in the field, however, many ADN holders are ready to seek a higher-level position or other advancement opportunities. Many of these opportunities require no less than a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree. In fact, most major hospitals now require a BSN or higher because they feel it ensures that nurses are well trained and prepared for advancement.

The most common degree path for these individuals is the RN-to-BSN program. RN-to-BSN programs allow licensed professional nurses to earn a BSN in as few as three semesters, depending on the number of accepted credit hours and whether the student chooses a full- or part-time schedule. Many of these programs offer flexible day, evening, and weekend schedules, and some are even offered entirely online.

While the overall employment outlook and salaries for registered nurses are excellent, the potential for high earnings and job stability increases when nurses hold a BSN or higher. Expected employment growth for RNs is 19% for the 2012-2022 decade, with a median salary of $65,470 per year nationwide. California-based RNs earn a median salary of $94,310 per year, almost $30,000 higher than the US median. Nurses in management, research, administration, and other positions of authority typically earn six figures. For example, California-based nurse managers earn an average of $118,040 per year.
