Registered nurses (RNs) form the backbone of the country’s healthcare industry, with an estimated 2.7 million RNs employed nationwide. They perform a broad range of medical tasks, such as conducting diagnostic tests, administering treatments and medications, operating medical equipment, and establishing patient care plans. RNs also frequently supervise teams of more junior nurses, including licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and certified nursing assistants (CNAs).
Utah’s nursing schools offer two types of RN prelicensure programs: a two-year associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) and a four-year bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). The state has roughly twenty RN prelicensure programs in total. These are offered by a broad mix of private institutions, like Brigham Young University and Stevens-Henager College, as well as public schools, like University of Utah and Weber State University. Regardless of school or degree pathway, all RN candidates must pass the NCLEX-RN national examination upon completion of their studies in order to gain licensure.
