A nursing assistant takes on the most junior role in the US nursing system. Nursing assistant certification is the basic level of licensure required to practice as a healthcare professional in Maryland. Upon certification, a nursing assistant will perform tasks under the supervision of a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or a registered nurse (RN).

Certification
A brief eight- to ten-week certification program is required in order to become a certified nursing assistant (CNA). In many states, this program is followed by a state-administered examination. Two prominent Maryland colleges that offer a nursing assistant certificate program are Allegany College of Maryland and Anne Arundel Community College. Several non-profit foundations grant scholarships to CNA students, including the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the Oncology Nursing Society. Minority Nurse also offers scholarships to nursing students from various backgrounds.

Many colleges in Maryland offer both a licensed practical nursing certificate and a registered nursing associate’s degree. These programs can be completed in a period of about two years.
