If you’re compassionate and find real fulfillment in caring for the sick and elderly, then the job of a nursing assistant is cut out for you. It’s a rewarding job not just in terms of the sense of fulfillment, but in potential compensation as well. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a certified nursing assistant in the state of Alabama receives an annual average salary of $21,030. They are in high demand in health care facilities, including hospitals, hospice facilities, and homes for the elderly.

A nursing assistant works under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN) to look after a patient’s personal needs, including bathing, feeding, and monitoring of vital signs. This allows RNs and LPNs to perform other nursing functions that require more advanced training and skills.

If you’re a high school graduate or GED certified, enrolling in a certified nursing assistant (CNA) program is a practical and inexpensive way to begin your career as a full-time registered nurse. A CNA program in Alabama takes only about three months to complete and costs approximately $1,000, including expenses for supplies. The program includes classroom and clinical training and prepares you to pass a certification exam to be included in the Alabama Nursing Assistant Registry.

Aside from a number of private vocational schools, including nursing home facilities with their own CNA program, there are several state-approved nursing assistant training programs in many community colleges across Alabama.
