Four-year colleges and universities focus their educational resources on baccalaureate programs of study. Most nursing candidates at these schools will therefore pursue a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree, which prepares them to practice as registered nurses (RNs). RNs are professional nurses who provide direct bedside care for patients and often manage the activities of more junior nurses. BSN programs entail many hours of classroom study and clinical experience. In addition, some colleges and universities also offer master of science in nursing (MSN) degree programs for existing nurses.
BSN degree programs prepare nursing students for the rapidly evolving landscape of U.S. healthcare. Indeed, many employers now require at least a bachelor’s degree for their nursing hires, especially for senior administrative positions. Utah has a number of prestigious colleges and universities with baccalaureate (and graduate) nursing programs, including Brigham Young University, University of Utah, and Weber State University.
