Utah is home to over 30,000 licensed nurses. This includes a healthy mix of professionals at all levels, including 10,000 certified nursing assistants (CNAs), 2,300 licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and more than 18,000 registered nurses (RNs). These numbers will expand rapidly as the Affordable Care Act is fully implemented and the Baby Boomer generation reaches retirement age.

To meet this demand for trained nurses, Utah’s colleges and universities offer a myriad of nursing programs. The state’s nursing schools can be broadly classified into two categories: large public schools and smaller private institutions. Utah’s public nursing schools generally charge lower tuition fees, and they base their programs on an established state-approved curriculum. As a result, these public schools feature large lecture classes and diverse student bodies. Private nursing schools, on the other hand, typically offer smaller class sizes, closer instructor attention, and a more personalized learning environment. These private schools charge significantly higher tuition than their public counterparts.

There are, of course, exceptions to this rubric. Two notable examples are Brigham Young University and AmeriTech College. Both are private schools: BYU is religiously affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, while AmeriTech is a for-profit school. However, both schools enroll a large nursing class of 100+ students each year. BYU offers a prelicensure bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) program, while AmeriTech offers a two-year associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) program. Both schools have enjoyed a track record of student success on the NCLEX-RN national licensure exam.

To help Utah’s nursing students survey their options, we’ve profiled below all of the state’s prelicensure nursing programs. You’ll find them listed by major metropolitan area and ordered from largest to smallest.
