US public, or state, universities are usually seated on large campuses, and for good reason. If the whole state could receive a good education within its borders, state universities would consider their mission accomplished. Local state or county residents, who often fund these colleges with their tax dollars, have first preference during the admissions process and a lower tuition bill.

Even though the cost of attendance is lower, public universities need not provide an inferior experience to their private school counterparts. In many states, quite the opposite is true. The University of Michigan, UCLA, and the College of William and Mary are all highly prestigious public universities. It is not an accident, therefore, that the number one nursing college in the state of Hawaii is its preeminent public university, University of Hawaii. Well-organized class structure and students' hard work have greatly distinguished this institution.

This all demonstrates that graduating from a state college will not decrease your chances of nursing employment post-graduation. What it will certainly do, however, is drastically decrease your student loan debt. With a tuition often half that of private universities, you can receive an excellent education at a great discount, perhaps even without financial aid.

If you've decided to attend a university you can literally call "home," please review our list below of Hawaii's public nursing schools to see which best suits your needs.
