There are two types of registered nursing (RN) prelicensure programs available in West Virginia: associate's degree in nursing (ADN) and bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) programs. The median annual salary of the state’s RNs is approximately $54,000. Below we profile several of West Virginia’s top RN programs in depth.
West Virginia University
WVU is the state’s largest public university, with almost 30,000 enrolled students. It offers two tracks for prospective nurses: a traditional four-year BSN program and an 18-month accelerated BSN program for college graduates. Students who embark on the former track must complete six semesters of clinical nursing courses after finishing all their prerequisites.
Wheeling Jesuit offers a prestigious bachelor of science in nursing that is among only eight percent of BSN programs nationwide to earn a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX-RN examination. Students who already hold a bachelor of arts or science degree should apply to the BA/BS-to-BSN program. Existing nurses who hold a diploma or associate’s degree can enroll in the school’s RN-to-BSN/MSN completion programs.
University of Charleston
Charleston’s prelicensure BSN program features technology-enhanced classroom facilities and small clinical lab sections with a student-to-teacher ratio of 10:1 or less. The program boasts a 100% employment rate for some of its recent BSN graduating classes.
In total, West Virginia is home to two dozen registered nursing prelicensure programs. We have listed below all schools with ADN and BSN programs, and we’ve rank-ordered them by their students’ recent NCLEX test scores.
