A registered nurse (RN) often directs a team of more junior licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, and orderlies. The RN thus plays a vital role in directing patient care. There are three types of RN prelicensure programs available in Rhode Island: hospital diploma, associate's degree in nursing (ADN), and bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). Across all pathways, the median annual salary for Rhode Island’s RNs is just under $75,000. Below we’ve profiled several of the state’s top RN programs.

Rhode Island College
Rhode Island College’s graduates consistently outperform state and national averages on the NCLEX-RN national licensure examination. Prospective students can choose from two prelicensure programs: a traditional four-year baccalaureate program and an accelerated BSN track. Existing nurses with a hospital diploma or ADN can also consider the school’s RN-to-BSN program.

University of Rhode Island
URI offers both a prelicensure bachelor’s degree program and an RN-to-BSN completion program. Students must pass nursing prerequisites and general education courses in their freshman year before progressing to the College of Nursing clinical sequence.

Salve Regina University
Salve Regina is a private Catholic university in Newport. The school offers a prelicensure BSN for students with no prior academic study in nursing, as well as a degree completion track for students who are already registered nurses. Graduates can apply for jobs at local healthcare facilities such as Lifespan and Kent Hospital.
