The Mohawk Valley includes the New York counties of Fulton, Herkimer, Montgomery, Oneida, Otsego, and Schoharie. This region is home to 2,980 registered nurses (RNs), 1,570 licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and 2,230 certified nursing assistants (CNAs). Although the population of nurses in Mohawk Valley is small compared to other regions of New York, opportunities are ample and the Valley’s top employers are still quite selective. This means you will need the right degree, training, and experience to land a nursing position.

Registered nurses perform a variety of challenging duties that include providing treatments, administering medications, and educating patients about medical conditions. To ensure that they have the skills needed to deliver exceptional patient care, New York’s aspiring RNs must complete either a hospital diploma, associate’s degree in nursing (ADN), or bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). Many nurses pursue a master of science in nursing (MSN) as well. All nurses must pass the NCLEX-RN national licensure exam before they begin practice.

LPNs care for the sick, injured, convalescent, or disabled under the supervision of registered nurses and physicians, while CNAs provide hands-on patient care and perform routine tasks. LPNs must complete an accredited, state-approved certificate program and pass the NCLEX-PN national licensure exam. CNAs must complete a short accredited certificate program.

Nursing graduates are prepared to seek lucrative positions at the Mohawk Valley’s top hospitals and healthcare centers. These include Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare, St. Mary’s Hospital, Mohawk Valley Network, and St. Elizabeth Medical Center. The Mohawk Valley’s RNs earn a median annual salary of $58,570, in line with the national average. The region’s LPNs earn $35,880 per year, and its CNAs earn $23,960 per year.

The following is a list of accredited nursing schools in the Mohawk Valley that offer high-quality CNA, LPN, ADN, BSN, and MSN programs for aspiring nurses.
