Oregon is home to a number of universities, colleges, and vocational schools at both the public and private level. Four-year colleges and universities offer a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN), master of science in nursing (MSN), and/or doctor of nursing practice (DNP) for aspiring registered nurses (RNs). Two-year community colleges and vocational schools offer certificates for certified nursing assistants (CNAs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs), as well as an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) for aspiring RNs.

Public versus private nursing schools
There are several important distinctions between Oregon’s public and private nursing schools. Private colleges provide a more exclusive education with smaller class sizes. The lower student-to-teacher ratio ensures that each nurse receives ample attention in the classroom and unconstrained access to facilities. By contrast, public institutions have bigger class sizes, driven by the school’s larger enrollment. Public colleges and universities often share resources across campuses, and they frequently share infrastructure with local hospitals and medical centers. Because these public schools are subsidized by the state government, local residents enjoy substantially lower tuition.

Career outlook for Oregon’s nurses
Whether they choose a large public university or a small private college, Oregon’s nursing students can anticipate a robust job market. The state is home to 11,200 CNAs, 2,800 LPNs, and 28,500 RNs. Local salaries are significantly higher than the national averages. Oregon’s CNAs earn a median annual salary of $27,000, while its LPNs earn about $48,000 per year. Local RNs receive an impressive $80,000 in annual pay. Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), such as nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and nurse anesthetists, regularly earn well over $100,000 per year.

If you prefer an intimate learning environment, consider a private nursing school. If you enjoy mingling with a large student population, a public nursing school may be best for you. In either case, we’ve profiled Oregon’s best nursing schools below to help you get started. You’ll find them grouped by major metropolitan area and ordered from largest to smallest.
