Nebraska’s nursing industry is large and growing rapidly, which creates opportunities for new entrants to the field. The state is home to over 40,000 nurses in total. These nursing professionals fill four critical roles: certified nursing assistant (CNA), licensed practical nurse (LPN), registered nurse (RN), and advanced practice registered nurse (APRN).

Many of Nebraska’s nurses were trained at local community colleges and career schools, which offer small class sizes and individualized attention. Others attended a traditional college or university with a large, diverse student body and a plethora of nursing programs. Ultimately, each nursing student must select the institution that best fits her learning style and career goals. Fortunately, Nebraska is home to a wide variety of schools that can fit just about any aspiring nurse.

Nebraska’s community colleges provide nursing programs on roughly a dozen campuses across the state. These schools offer streamlined vocational programs with lower tuition costs and a faster path to nursing employment. The state also offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral nursing degrees at its University of Nebraska Medical Center campuses in Omaha, Lincoln, Scottsbluff, Kearney, and Norfolk. In addition to these public options, Nebraska has 15 private colleges and universities with accredited nursing programs, including Creighton University in Omaha and Kaplan University in Lincoln. These private schools are significantly more expensive than their public counterparts because they offer smaller class sizes, individualized attention, and deep learning experiences.
