Licensed practical nurses are responsible for carrying out more complex medical procedures, such as administering medication, measuring blood pressure and body temperature, performing CPR, and administering basic care to patients. LPNs also have opportunities to supervise certified nursing assistants and orderlies, and usually operate under the guidance of a registered nurse (RN).

Training and certification
The LPN program can be completed in 12-18 months, and is deliberately flexible to cater to the different needs of nursing students. Two-year associate’s degree programs are also available at certain institutions. A certificate in licensed practical nursing can be obtained at several community colleges in the state, such as Allegany College of Maryland, Hagerstown Community College, and Baltimore City Community College. These certificate programs provide training in anatomy, physiology, medications, and practical patient care. Upon completion, candidates must pass the national examination NCLEX-PN in order to practice as licensed LPNs. Per state or national board regulations, licenses must be renewed on a regular basis.
