Programs include LPN/LVN, ADN, BSN, MSN, and more

As the U.S. healthcare industry grows more complex, nurses find their job scopes broadening. It therefore behooves aspiring nurses to pursue a rigorous degree program in preparation for their career. In fact, the Institute of Medicine has called for 80 percent of registered nurses (RNs) to hold a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) by 2020.

Overview of the BSN program
A traditional prelicensure BSN program requires four years of study to complete. Existing RNs who already hold an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) or hospital diploma may opt instead for the shorter RN-to-BSN degree completion program. Virginia has approximately 30 prelicensure BSN programs and a plethora of RN-to-BSN options. The state’s most popular BSN programs are offered at public universities – including George Mason, James Madison, and Virginia Commonwealth – as well as private religious colleges like Liberty, Marymount, and Shenandoah Universities. Graduates from any of these top-notch BSN programs will enjoy a leg up with prospective employers across the state.

Virginia’s RN employment
Virginia’s 60,000 RNs earn a median annual salary of $62,750. However, those with BSN degrees frequently earn top-quartile pay of $74,140 or more per year. The BSN also enables faster career progression, since many administrative and managerial roles require this degree. Finally, BSN-educated nurses can later pursue a master’s degree to enter advanced practice roles that pay $90,000 to $150,000 per year, depending on specialization.

To help Virginia’s nursing students understand all of their options, we have compiled below a detailed list of the state’s BSN programs. This list includes both prelicensure and RN-to-BSN pathways.
