The bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) programs in Illinois are a great starting point for aspiring nurses interested in a registered nursing (RN) career. It is critical for prospective students to research the state’s numerous BSN programs in order to identify the best fit for their needs.

BSN education
In recent decades, a great number of nurses have chosen a BSN education to better equip themselves for increasingly complex and diversified nursing responsibilities. A BSN education prepares registered nurses for work in multiple settings and trains them for independent decision-making, opening the door to many professional opportunities. There are two types of BSN offerings: prelicensure programs that prepare students for the NCLEX-RN licensure exam, and RN-to-BSN programs that enable existing ADN-educated nurses to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Find a school

Prelicensure programs are typically four years in length and give students a firm grounding in professional nursing. No prior nursing experience or education is needed for this program. The program combines theory, clinical hands-on training, laboratory work, and simulation learning experiences. There are roughly thirty schools in Illinois offering prelicensure BSN programs. Some of the top schools are Rockford University and St. John’s College, which boast extremely high NCLEX-RN examination pass rates.

RN-to-BSN programs are for existing RNs who seek to further their nursing knowledge and take on greater responsibility in the healthcare workforce. These programs, which can be taken part-time, range from two to four years in length.

Career pathways
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are almost 110,000 RNs employed across Illinois. These nurses earn a median annual salary of $64,890; BSN-educated nurses frequently land in the top quartile, earning over $78,220 per year. Registered nurses can look forward to a career with the state’s major healthcare employers, including The University of Chicago Hospitals, VITAS Healthcare, and Northwest Community Hospital.

To assist prospective RNs, we have compiled a list of Illinois schools that offer accredited BSN programs and organized them below by major city.
