The Provo / Orem metropolitan area has a half-dozen accredited nursing schools. These institutions offer prelicensure programs for four distinct nursing roles: certified nursing assistant (CNA), licensed practical nurse (LPN), registered nurse (RN), and advanced practice registered nurse (APRN).

Nursing assistants fill the most junior nursing role. To gain licensure, Utah’s CNAs must only complete a brief training program of several months and pass a state-administered examination. Mountainland Applied Technology College offers one of the most highly regarded CNA certificate programs in the Provo / Orem area. The region has about 1,500 CNAs earning a median annual salary of $22,400.

Licensed practical nurses are more senior than CNAs. They must complete a more intense certificate program, typically requiring 12 months of fulltime study. Utah’s LPNs must also pass the NCLEX-PN national licensure examination before practicing. Mountainland Applied Technology College provides the only state-approved LPN certificate program in the Provo / Orem area. About 350 LPNs are employed locally, earning roughly $40,600 per year.

Registered nurses may conduct a number of medical procedures autonomously, and they often supervise more junior LPNs and CNAs. Utah’s RNs must earn either a two-year associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) or a four-year bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). All candidates must also pass the NCLEX-RN national licensure examination before practicing. Provo College and Utah Valley University offer the two state-approved ADN programs in the Provo / Orem area. Brigham Young University offers the only four-year prelicensure BSN program in the region. The 3,000 local RNs earn a median annual salary of $56,000.

Advanced practice registered nurses must complete one to three years of graduate study in order to fill specialized roles like nurse practitioner. The Provo / Orem area has several universities with accredited master of science in nursing (MSN) programs, including Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University. The area’s 300 nurse practitioners earn about $87,000 annually.
